Why Is My Candle Tunnelling? Causes & Fixes
A narrow well down the middle and a thick untouched rim of wax — here's why it happens and how to fix it.

Tunnelling is one of the most common complaints candle owners raise, and it's also one of the easiest to prevent once you understand why it happens. If your candle has burned a narrow well straight down the middle while leaving a thick, untouched rim of wax around the edge, you've got tunnelling. It's frustrating because it looks like wasted product — sometimes a third or more of the wax in the jar never melts at all — but the cause is well understood, and in most cases you can either prevent it outright or partially rescue a candle that's already gone wrong.
What Tunnelling Actually Looks Like
Tunnelling shows up gradually rather than all at once. The melt pool — the layer of liquid wax around the wick — stops reaching the glass on each burn, so a ring of solid wax builds up at the rim while the middle burns down like a chimney. Left unchecked, the wick can end up several centimetres below the level of the untouched wax, sitting at the bottom of a narrow shaft. At that point the flame struggles for oxygen, burns smaller and dimmer, and the scent throw drops off noticeably because there's far less liquid wax surface area to release fragrance oil into the room.
Why It Happens
The single biggest cause is a rushed first burn. Wax genuinely does have "memory" — whatever diameter the melt pool reaches on that very first light tends to become the maximum diameter it reaches on every burn after that. If you blow a candle out after 45 minutes because the pool has only reached halfway to the glass, that halfway mark is effectively locked in. For a standard jar candle around 70–80mm across, it typically takes a first burn of three to four hours for the pool to reach the edges properly; smaller votives and tealights need less, but rarely under two hours.
Wick sizing is the second big culprit, and it's one shoppers rarely think about. Wicks are graded to a jar diameter — a cotton wick sized for a 60mm jar (roughly a CD-10 or CD-12 in the sizing systems suppliers use) simply won't throw enough heat to melt wax all the way to the glass in an 80mm jar. This happens more often than you'd expect with candles that have been rebranded or poured by smaller makers without proper burn testing, and no amount of correct burning technique will fix an undersized wick.
Ambient temperature plays a bigger role than most people realise, too. Burning a candle on a cold windowsill, in an unheated room, or near an open window in winter keeps the outer wax closer to room temperature, so it resists melting even while the centre is liquid. A draught has a similar effect by constantly cooling the flame and the wax nearest the glass. And simply not burning for long enough each time — even after a good first burn — lets a new, slightly smaller memory ring form session after session, so the tunnel creeps inward gradually over weeks.
How to Fix It
If you catch it early, a long corrective burn is usually enough. Let the candle run for three to four hours, or until the pool genuinely reaches the glass all the way round, even if that's longer than you'd normally burn it. For candles further gone, the foil trick is the most reliable home fix: wrap a strip of kitchen foil around the top of the jar so it forms a loose collar a couple of centimetres above the wax, then tent the middle inward over the flame with a small hole for the wick to poke through. This traps and reflects heat back down onto the unmelted rim, helping it catch up with the centre over one or two long burns.
For a badly tunnelled candle where the wick has sunk well below the wax surface, a hairdryer on a low, warm setting held a short distance above the wax can gently soften the rim enough to encourage it to melt into the pool — go slowly and never leave it unattended. As a last resort, carefully scooping out the built-up wall of unmelted wax with a metal spoon so the surface is roughly level restores a flat burning surface and lets the candle behave normally from that point on, even though you'll have sacrificed some wax in the process.

Preventing It Next Time
Prevention is simpler than any fix: always give a new candle a first burn of three to four hours (check the packaging for guidance specific to that candle), never extinguish it before the pool reaches the glass, avoid draughty spots, and burn in a room that's already at a normal living temperature rather than one that's just been heated from cold.
How do I fix a candle that's tunnelling?
Start with a long, uninterrupted burn — three to four hours, or however long it takes for the melt pool to reach the glass on all sides. If the tunnel is already deep, the foil-collar method speeds this up by reflecting heat back onto the unmelted rim. For severe cases, gently softening the rim with a hairdryer or scraping the excess wax level with a spoon will get the candle burning evenly again, though you may lose a small amount of wax in the process.
