Choosing the Right Scent: A Mum’s Preferences
When selecting a candle gift for your mum, it's crucial to consider her individual tastes and what evokes feelings of comfort and relaxation for her. While some scents are undeniably popular, a truly personalised gift will be one that aligns with her particular preferences. Thinking about the types of environments she finds most soothing – perhaps a cosy reading nook, a spa-like bathroom, or even the scent of freshly baked goods – is a great starting point.
Many women gravitate towards floral scents like rose, lavender, and jasmine, associating them with elegance and calm. However, don’t rule out other categories entirely. Woody notes such as sandalwood or cedarwood can offer a grounding effect, particularly appreciated by those who enjoy the outdoors or value a sense of serenity. Citrus fragrances, including lemon, bergamot and grapefruit are often associated with uplifting energy and cleanliness – these could be a lovely option if your mum enjoys brighter, more vibrant scents.
Consider her favourite hobbies too; does she enjoy gardening? A herbaceous scent like rosemary or thyme might be appreciated. Does she love baking? Vanilla or spice blends can bring back comforting memories. The key is to think beyond simply ‘floral’ or ‘woody’ and delve into the nuances of each fragrance family – notes like amber, musk, and patchouli add depth and complexity that can elevate a candle from simple scent to an immersive experience.
Wax Types: Impacting Scent Throw & Burn Time
The type of wax used in a candle significantly impacts its burn time, scent throw (how strongly the fragrance is released), and overall performance. Paraffin wax was historically the most common choice, offering excellent scent retention but producing more soot during burning. Soy wax is now increasingly popular due to its renewable source, cleaner burn, and ability to hold fragrance oils effectively – often resulting in a smoother, longer-lasting scent experience.
Beeswax offers a subtle honeyed aroma that can complement certain scents beautifully and burns exceptionally cleanly. However, it tends to have a lower scent throw than paraffin or soy wax, so you might want to pair it with a stronger fragrance oil. Blends of waxes – for example, a combination of soy and beeswax – are also available, offering the best of both worlds in terms of performance and sustainability.
When considering wax type, also think about burn time. Soy wax generally burns slower than paraffin, meaning you’ll get more hours of enjoyment from your chosen candle. Larger candles containing higher percentages of natural waxes will typically offer a longer burn duration too.
Scent Throw Techniques: Maximising the Fragrance
Even the finest wax and fragrance oil combination won’t deliver optimal scent throw if not used correctly. Firstly, ensure your candle has a good wick – a wick that's too small will struggle to draw up enough melted wax for a full burn, leading to tunnelling (where the wax only burns down the centre) and a diminished scent profile.
Allow each burn to reach its maximum height before extinguishing it. This allows the fragrance oil to fully vaporise and disperse throughout the room. However, be mindful of burning times – prolonged burning can lead to wick smoking and excessive soot production. Aim for 2-4 hours of burn time per session, allowing the wax pool to melt back down about a half inch (1cm) before re-lighting.
For particularly challenging scents or larger rooms, consider using a candle warmer instead of a traditional flame. Candle warmers gently heat the fragrance oil without creating a flame, resulting in consistent scent diffusion and minimising soot. This isn’t for everyone if you prefer the visual element of a flickering candle flame; however, it's a reliable way to enjoy a strong fragrance.
Finally, ensure your space is well-ventilated to aid the fragrance dispersion. Don’t place the candle in a small, enclosed room – allowing air circulation will significantly enhance its scent throw.

Frequently Asked Questions
If your candle is tunnelling, try gently straightening the wick before re-lighting it. You can also try trimming the wick more frequently to ensure a cleaner burn and reduce carbon build-up.
